Merchandising in je webshop: bewust of per ongeluk?Merchandising in your webshop: deliberate or by accident?
By default your shop sorts by name, by date, or by an order you set once and forgot. Why that falls short, and how I solved it for Shopware with a plugin that recalculates every night.
Alles is nu in eigen beheer.
In a physical store, everything hangs in the right place. Bestsellers at eye level. The new collection near the entrance. Sale at the back, so you walk past everything else. That's not a coincidence, that's merchandising. And it works, because good placement is the difference between a product that gets seen and a product that just sits there.
Online it's exactly the same. Except nobody notices when it goes wrong.
What your shop does by default
By default your shop sorts by name, by date, or by a manual order you set once and never touched again. Meanwhile your catalogue changes every day. New products come in. Bestsellers shift. Seasons change.
There are tools that solve this, but they're tied to external vendors. No direct control, no insight into the parameters, and dependent on a third party for every change.
So the question isn't whether you do merchandising. The question is whether you do it deliberately or by accident.
Smart Merchandising
That's why I built Smart Merchandising, a Shopware plugin that automatically optimises the product order in your categories based on real performance data. The plugin looks at sales, conversion, trending, stock and newness, and calculates a score per product. The highest scores go on top. Automatically, recalculated every night.
As an architect I looked at three things. Control: the merchant decides which metrics weigh heavier, via eight sliders per category. Transparency: an admin grid shows exactly how each product scores and why. Flexibility: manual pinning stays available for campaigns and seasonal collections. You pick the strategy that fits your store — Bestsellers, Revenue, Trending, or your own mix. No vendor, no dependency, no black box.
How Tess V uses it
Tess V already knew merchandising. They were using Voyado to sort and position products, but everything ran through the vendor. We replaced that entirely with Smart Merchandising, with custom work on top.
The result is a two-layer system. Layer one: product sets for drops. Every Tuesday they launch new products. Those go into a set by hand, in their own order, linked to a category. That set always sits on top, the same for everyone — regardless of the algorithm underneath. Layer two: the algorithm per category. There they turn the dials themselves. Push harder on sales, conversion or stock, exactly what the category needs at that moment. What's still missing is a boost-and-bury feature; that's planned for the next version.
The big difference with Voyado? Everything is now under their own control. They see the effect immediately and no longer depend on anyone.
No merchandising without numbers
Deliberate merchandising starts with knowing what's happening. And that's where the standard Shopware dashboard falls short. Revenue today, number of orders — that's it. Want to know more? Then you export to a spreadsheet or hook up Google Analytics or a BI tool. But those only see behaviour on your website, not what actually happens inside your shop. No profit, no margins, no insight into which products cost money instead of making it. Shopware Analytics now exists as a free extension, but it's still limited: fixed dashboards, no profit analytics.
That's why I built Shop Insights alongside it. Sixty widgets across nine categories, a dashboard you assemble yourself with drag-and-drop, and everything runs on your own server. Setup takes less than a minute.
Both plugins are in the Shopware Store, with a free trial month. Smart Merchandising at 50 euros per month, Shop Insights at 25. But it doesn't start with the plugin. It starts with the question: do you merchandise deliberately, or by accident?
